Visual IR & The Aesthetics of the International

In a recent study co-authored with Oded Lowenheim (Hebrew University), we revisit Carol Cohn's seminal essay "Sex and Death in the Rational World of Defense Intellectuals" (1987), which is considered one of the foundational texts in feminist security studies and IR. In this study, we build on recent feminist works in IR and studies of visual security to expose a new visual layer of this classical text, and demonstrate our argument through the analysis of prevailing political imaginaries used by scholars/students of the international on academic posters, department websites, program brochures, and book cover designs.
